City Streets

September 24, 2008 00:00

Curated by Magnum photographer Nikos Economopoulos, the exhibition “City Streets” narrated the changing face of Athens, a multicultural city. Result of a project developed to exceed the awareness of young people on the subjects of migration, social integration and coexistence, the exhibition consisted of photos by six young photographers and eighty-five pupils from different schools in Athens who attended photography workshops during the project. Text extracts compiled from interviews and narratives of migrants in Greece by the anthropologist and the project consultant on migration issues Nadina Christopoulou accompanied the photographs at the exhibition.

Comprising more than 150 photographs, the “City Streets” exhibition aimed to provide the medium for creatively confronting challenges to contemporary societies raised by issues of identity and cultural difference. The images in the exhibition are fleeting glances of people of different origins and orientations at the city they live in. They are at the same time incentives to reinvent the city in which we shall dwell tomorrow.

The “City Streets” exhibition was organised in cooperation with the British Council Greece and IMEPO (Hellenic Migration Policy Institute).
