Light, Illumination and Electricity

Aralık 01, 2007 00:00

santralistanbul’s first international residency project “Light, Illumination and Electricity” was organised from December 2007 through January 2008. Implemented with the support of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue Between Cultures network, the project brought together ten contemporary artists who work in European and Mediterranean countries, and many curators and art critics, including Andreas Broeckmann, Gregor Jansen and Jan Peter E.R. Sonntag from Germany, Paolo Rosa from Italy, and Etienne Rey from France, to work around the theme of light and electricity. The project was led by santralistanbul with the partnerships of ZINC-ECM de la Friche Belle de Mai from France, The Townhouse Gallery from Egypt, SCCA - Centre for Contemporary Arts from Slovenia and NOMAD from Turkey.

Cynthia Zaven from Lebanon, Adham Hafez from Egypt, Marko Kovačič and Borut Savski from Slovenia, Rémy Rivoire, Bruno Voillet and Renaud Vercey from France, and Carlo Crovato from the United Kingdom were hosted at santralistanbul within the framework of the project starting from September 2007. Cevdet Erek who participated from Turkey was hosted in Cairo during his one-month residency period. Throughout the duration of the project, the artists of the project, including Ceren Oykut from İstanbul, participated in talks, presentations, performances and workshops organised around the theme of light end electricity. Different techniques that fall under the themes of light and electricity were addressed in the workshops that were executed by the project’s artists Ceren Oykut and Carlo Crovato, as well as Aylin Kalem and Murat Erhanoğlu.

While the works implemented by the artists throughout the project were open to viewing as open-workshops at santralresidence, the works created on the theme of electricity were displayed in the Energy Museum with the exhibition curated by Başak Şenova under the same title. The “Light, Illumination and Electricity” exhibition that ran from November 1 to 30, 2007, placed the evolving relationship between technology and art on the agenda.

The activities implemented throughout the “Light, Illumination and Electricity” project have been compiled in the book entitled Light, Illumination and Electricity which is scheduled to be published in October 2008 by santralistanbul.
